Dear Parent / Carer,

World Book Day
This year World Book Day, the biggest annual celebration of books and reading for children in the UK and Ireland, falls on Thursday, March 4th. As in previous years, all the children in Key Stage 1 and 2 will receive a free £1 Book Token which can be exchanged at participating bookshops for one of six specially published £1 books - five of which are 'flip' books - two books in 1! The bookshop on Main Street will accept the tokens.

Ofsted Report
You should have received a copy of our latest Ofsted report this week. If not, please contact the office who will provide you with a copy. The report will also be available on our website and online at www.ofsted.gov.uk shortly.

Potato Growing Competition
Next week is the start of our annual potato growing competition! We are entering a national competition this year as well as our class competition. If you wish to join in the fun at home, have a look at the following website: www.potatoesforschools.org.uk

Zig Zags
You may have noticed that over the half term holiday the zig zags outside the school have been extended right in to the main gate. It is therefore illegal to park in this area. We thank all parents who park safely and considerately and who are as concerned as we are about the safety of children and adults in and around school.

Y5 Parents / Carers
The government is currently considering changing the date of SATs next year from May to June. Therefore, if you are likely to be booking a holiday for next year and have a child in Y5, please avoid both May and June. I will let you know once a date has been confirmed.

Safety Focus Week
Next week we have a special focus week in school and all classes will be working on the theme of safety. It might be a good opportunity to have a chat with your child about various aspects of safety (e.g. road safety, railway safety, stranger danger, e-safety etc.). Look out for more information in next week's newsletter.

Attendance Champions
Well done to Class 3/4V who had 98.5% attendance last week. Attendance for the whole school was 95.3% which is below our school target of 95.7%.

Quote of the week
The job of an educator is to teach students to see the vitality in themselves.”

School Goal for Spring Term 2010: I can talk about what I am learning and how I am trying to improve.

Dear Parent / Carer,

Attendance Champions!
Well done to Class 3/4V who had 99.1% attendance last week! Attendance for the whole school was 96.9% which is above our school target of 95.7%.

Quote of the week
“It is important that students bring a certain ragamuffin, barefoot irreverence to their studies; they are not here to worship what is known, but to question it.” Jacob Bronowski

Ofsted Inspection
This week we received a two day Ofsted inspection. The outcome of which is confidential until the full report is published in a couple of weeks. The report will be sent to all parents / carers at that time. The staff are delighted that Ofsted recognised our achievements over the last year and agreed with our self-evaluation of the school and the priorities we have identified for school improvement. We are also proud that throughout the inspection, several comments were made by the inspectors about how well-behaved, confident and engaged our pupils were.

Y1/2 visit to The Deep
Children in Key Stage 1 visited 'The Deep' on Wednesday and Thursday this week. It was fantastic talking to the children on their return from the visit; they were so full of excitement, enthusiasm and amazing facts. The visit has really inspired the children and already they have made some beautiful art creations and a book based on their learning.

Learning Log workshops - Wednesday 10th February
Key Stage 1 will take place at 2.45 - 3.15 (community room) and for Key Stage 2 at 3.20 - 3.50 (in the hall). KS2 children should attend this workshop with their parent/s. If you are unable to make the workshop but still require further information, we will be sending an information sheet to all parents after the event. Otherwise, you may talk to your child's class teacher at a more convenient time.

Involving parents at East Garforth
Throughout the year we intend to provide additional information for parents (e.g. Parent Information Evening for each phase group at the beginning of each year, workshops etc.). Lots of parents have said they would like to be involved but due to work commitments are unable to make some of these events. Certain events such as plays, sports day and workshops such as 'maths in action' obviously have to happen while children are in school. However, the other meetings for parents will sometimes take place in the evening. Please be aware that this will not always be possible as it requires staff to work outside of their normal hours and is therefore voluntary and unpaid. It is very difficult to please everyone but by providing a range of different times and by providing as much notice as possible we hope most parents will be able to attend at least some of the meetings each year.

There will be no newsletter next week (Friday 12th February) as we have a training day.

School Goal for Spring Term 2010: I can talk about what I am learning and how I am trying to improve.

Dear Parent / Carer,
Attendance Champions!
Well done to Class 5/6N who had 99.4% attendance last week! Attendance for the whole school was 98.4% which is above our school target of 95.7%.

Contact details
We are going to start using a text service to communicate some information to parents. For example, when an after school club has to be cancelled due to weather at short notice or if children are going to be late arriving back to school from a trip. This will hopefully be a much more efficient system for the office staff and will be convenient for parents. Obviously, if you do not have a mobile phone, office staff will contact you individually as before.
For this system to work it is crucial that we always have your current mobile phone number. Please make sure you have given the office the most up-to-date contact numbers.

Dates for the diary

Friday 12th February - Teacher Training Day on curriculum innovation. School will be closed to pupils on this day.
Learning Log workshop - Wednesday 10th February
Key Stage 1 will take place at 2.45 - 3.15 and for Key Stage 2 at 3.20 - 3.50 (children should attend this workshop with their parent/s). We will confirm the venue in the newsletter next week. If you are unable to make the workshop but still require further information, we will be sending an information sheet to all parents after the event. Otherwise, you may talk to your child's class teacher at a more convenient time

Parent / teacher consultation
The five minute meeting will be an opportunity for you to discuss your child's progress and next step learning targets. Please make sure you have returned the reply slip so we can confirm appointment times as soon as possible.

Focus Day
We have have some fabulous responses about the 'Enterprise East Garforth' Focus Day, which raised £249.67. Here are some examples:
Children's comments:
"I liked it because it was fun and if you started a business, it could help you.""I had so much fun it was like getting an extra day at the weekend."
"It was awesome."
"I really enjoyed being an inventor like in Dragon's Den."
"I loved the day. I feel sorry for Mum and Dad now I understand why we can't just buy everything we want and why we have to save up."
Parents' comments:
"My children felt inspired and couldn't stop talking about how much they'd learned and enjoyed themselves.""The KS1 afternoon was busy and all the kids were having lots of fun. I think the children enjoyed and benefited from running their own stalls.""You may have the next millionaire on your hands."

PTA contribution to 'wow' experiences
The PTA have kindly donated £1000 to school (£250 each for Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2). This is to help us provide 'wow' experiences in our newly designed curriculum and will go towards the additional costs associated with more visits and visitors which enrich the curriculum experience for children. We will keep you informed about how this money has been used.

Zig-zags
The Highways department have now agreed to put zig-zag markings up to the school gates which should improve safety for pedestrians in this area. Work will be taking place in the next few weeks.

Maths in action
We hope you enjoyed the 'Maths in action' session yesterday. Following this session we will be organising a maths workshop for parents to explain some of the methods used in Primary Maths teaching. If you were unable to attend but have a request for the workshop, please see Miss Rathore or Mr Waterhouse.

Really good school meal

The really good school meal raised £42.40 and will therefore pay for 424 children in a developing country to have a school meal. Thank you for your contributions.

Haiti Appeal
A huge thank you to Olivia and Emily who arranged the fundraising for the Haiti appeal. It is fantastic to have children at East Garforth who want to make a difference and to help others. The total raised is £289.74. Well done and thank you to everyone involved.

Ethos statement: I can help my class and whole school work towards their goals

Dear Parent / Carer,

Focus Day - Enterprise East Garforth!
The whole school has taken part in a thoroughly enjoyable and exciting day of practical learning challenges based around money. A huge thank you to all of the staff who have worked so hard to create such an innovative curriculum for the children. This is what we've been up to:

Year 5/6
Dragon's Den- could you design an imaginative invention? Year 5/6 have taken a Dragon's Den approach to designing a unique invention. The children worked in groups in order to produce a design brief for an invention of their choice. This was then taken to a class vote whereby pupils voted for their favourite inventions within their class. The three most popular inventions from each class were then presented to The Dragons (Miss Neary, Mrs Cartwright and Mrs O'Neill) to prove they were worthy of the investment money which was up for grabs. An amazing day all round with some interesting and wonderful inventions!

Year 3/4
Y3/4 have been busy costing, budgeting and spending (virtually of course!). They worked in 'family groups' with a set weekly income, and had to budget for the supermarket, a meal out and replacing kitchen appliances. Whilst some families budgeted very carefully, others decided to spend, spend, spend!
Some quotes form the day:
"I know food is so expensive. Now I know how my Dad feels."
"I'll only order water at the restaurant."
"Aren't credit cards expensive!"
"It's hard being an adult."

Year 1/2 Money, Money, Money!
Key Stage 1 have enjoyed taking part in raising money for their outdoor learning classroom whilst learning how to handle money and be an entrepreneur! Dressed in a vast array of money-inspired outfits, the children have had great fun making and playing games, performing for appreciative audiences and baking and selling delicious goodies! They are now looking forward to seeing how much money they have raised and what it will enable them to acquire for their new outdoor learning area. A big thank you to everyone that has supported this exciting event.

Foundation Stage
Throughout the day F2 have enjoyed listening and questioning visitors about how they earn money. We split in to two teams and we guessed the visitors occupations from the clues we were given. In F1 we talked about how our parents earn their money and the different jobs they do. A big thank you to all of our visitors.

Year 4/5 Basketball Tournament
Congratulations to the Year 4/5 Basketball Team for winning the Basketball Tournament on Tuesday 19th January 2010. They won every match and displayed great skill along with a positive attitude. All children who took part played outstandingly well and displayed great team spirit! The team are now through to the final, which is due to take place in the next few weeks.

Year 5/6 Athletics
Just a quick reminder that the Athletics City Semi-Final is on Monday 1st February at Fearnville Leisure centre and will start at 4.30pm. A letter will be sent out nearer the time.

Attendance Champions!
Well done to Class 5/6N and 1G who had 100% attendance last week! Attendance for the whole school was 97.5% which is above our school target of 95.7%.

Quote of the week
“Even the clearest water appears opaque at great depth.” Anonymous

Parent Governor Election
I am pleased to announce that Julie Mounty and Kevin Caldwell have been elected as parent governor representatives. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the parents who volunteered to take this role. We are very lucky to have so many parents who are willing to share their time and expertise. Thank you.

School Goal
After an assembly about New Year's resolutions at the beginning of term, children have been deciding on individual learning goals, class goals and a whole school goal. This is our whole school goal:

I can talk about what I am learning and how I am trying to improve.

Hopefully, children will be able to tell you if you ask them. Why not give it a try?

Dear Parent / Carer,

Icy conditions letter
You should have received a letter this week about the icy conditions around school.

Focus Day - Enterprise East Garforth
Next Friday East Garforth will be having a focus day where all classes will be working on an enterprise theme. More details to follow next week. We are hoping that it will be as exciting and interesting as our previous focus days have been.

Attendance Champions
Well done to Class 1G who had 78.4% attendance last week. Attendance for the whole school was 76.7% which is below our school target of 95.1%.

School Improvement Priorities - Spring Term
Pupil Progress is the main area for development this year and will underpin all aspects of our school improvement work. Our focus so far has been on quality first teaching; effective use of assessment for learning techniques; a tracking system based on teacher assessments; early identification of pupils causing concern; appropriate interventions for those pupils; raised expectations for all pupils; and the accountability of staff through performance management of children‘s progress. This term we continue to work on these important areas. We also intend to further develop our new curriculum and develop leadership at all levels through coaching and reflective practice. Please talk to any of the Senior Leadership Team (Mrs Godfrey, Ms Morrisroe, Mr Waterhouse and Mrs Bell) if you require further information.

Views' of stakeholders
Next week you will be receiving our annual parents' questionnaire. Please take a few minutes to complete this as we value your opinions and have acted on many of your suggestions over the last year. Pupils in school will be completing a similar survey.

Viking Invasion reaches Garforth!
Today Years 3 and 4 fought off an invasion by Viking marauders ...... no, they didn't really, but they had a wonderful day full of activities and investigations about life in Viking times. They played games, made key rings using runes (that's Viking writing to you and me), found out about Viking homes, weapons, everyday items in and around the house, and so much more. Well done to those who also made their own costumes - look out for pictures on the website and in windows next week. Thanks to Historical Interpretations for their visit.

Dear Parent / Carer,

Happy New Year to everyone. I do hope you had a lovely Christmas break and have managed to enjoy the snowy weather.

Mrs Armitage
We are delighted to announce that Mrs Armitage has had a beautiful baby boy. He was born on the 28th December and is called Alexander Henry. I am sure you will join me in congratulating Mrs Armitage on her new addition to the family.

PTA
There will be a PTA meeting on Friday 15th January at 3.30pm in the community room. Please come along and help support the team of parents and staff who work incredibly hard to organise fundraising activities for your children. Even if you only have a limited amount of time to spare, your support would be greatly appreciated.
By organising the PTA meetings on different times and days, we hope that throughout the year we can attract as many different people as possible. Last year the PTA purchased the DS Lites which are proving incredibly popular with the children and are already helping to increase children's speed and confidence with mental maths.

Adverse weather
Please make sure you have read the letter which was sent out earlier this week regarding the snowy weather we are experiencing and how to find out if school is closed. We are currently updating the web site each morning while the weather is particularly bad but if there is no update to the web site, please assume that school is therefore open.

Staffing
This week we welcome two new members of support staff to East Garforth. Mrs Crossley will be working in KS1 covering Mrs Armitage's maternity leave and Mrs Barron will be working in Foundation Stage to support flexible provision.

Y6 Transition Meeting
There will be a meeting at 6pm in the school hall on Tuesday 12th January for parents of children in Y6 about transition arrangements to Garforth Community College in September 2010.

Quotes
We often use inspirational quotes in school, both with children and staff. Our 'quote of the week' theme this year for teachers is teaching and learning. As parents, you are the main educators of your children and so we thought it would be appropriate to share our weekly quote with you. I hope you enjoy them and that they inspire or raise questions.
'Quote of the week'

“Good teaching is more a giving of right questions than a giving of right answers.” Josef Albers

Parent Governor elections
There will be a separate letter sent out regarding the election of two parent governors.

Dear Parent / Carer,

Christmas has begun - it's official!
This week saw the event that always starts Christmas for me. Four children sang at the Town Hall Christmas concert on Tuesday evening as part of the Festival Choir. Following gruelling rehearsals, the concert was a resounding success, opening with a beautiful solo and ending with an arrangement of Slade‘s 'Merry Christmas Everybody' that nearly had the rafters rattling! Thanks to Amber, Emily, Harriet and Laura (and their parents) for their sterling efforts.
Mrs Robinson
A huge thank you to Mrs Robinson for the time and effort she has put into making this event possible for our children to participate in. Well done to all of the children involved!

Gifted and Talented Maths
A big 'Well Done' to Oliver (5/6E) and Laura (5/6E) who received a medal for all their hard work and logical thinking at the local Gifted and Talented Maths Evening. Various local schools attended the evening which was held at Strawberry Fields School. It was a great success and very enjoyable for all.
Miss Neary.
Thank you Miss Neary and well done Oliver and Laura! We are very proud of your achievements.

Lunches
You will shortly be receiving a letter from the Governing Body about school lunches and packed lunches.

Attendance Champions!
Well done to Class 3/4V who had 99.6% attendance last week! Attendance for the whole school was 96.4% which is above our new school target of 95.8%.

Christmas Plays
The whole school has been involved in performing to huge audiences for their Christmas productions over the last two weeks. It has been a delight to see the children singing so beautifully, speaking so loudly and clearly and wearing such fantastic costumes. Polished performances, amazing comedy timing and super singing; I'm convinced that children at East Garforth have definitely got the X-Factor! As always there has been a big team effort to make the plays possible and I would like to thank the staff, pupils and parents for their contributions which have made the events such a success.

Assembly
Reverend Gordon Cooper visited East Garforth this week to take a Christmas assembly for the children.

Next Week
Next week in school sees festivities increase with Christmas parties, Christmas dinner and a pantomime for Key Stage 1 and Foundation Stage. We will end the week by gathering together as a school to sing carols around the Christmas tree.
School closes on Friday 18th December and will re-open again on Monday 4th January. There will not be a newsletter next week so I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Dear Parent / Carer,

Attendance Champions!
Well done to Class 1G who had 98.8% attendance last week! Attendance for the whole school was 97.2% which is above our school target of 95.1%.

KS2 Christmas Production
Tickets are now sold out for Friday 11th and only a few remain for Thursday 10th. If you have any tickets you will not be able to use, please send them back to school so we can give them to people who have requested additional tickets.

Christmas Dinner
Our special Christmas dinner takes place on Thursday 17th December (please see letter for further details). It would be wonderful to see as many children as possible having a school dinner on this day. All money for this special lunch needs to be sent to school by Wednesday 8th December.

Parking
You may have noticed that we have received some police presence at school to monitor the difficulties with parking. We are currently investigating the possibility of installing electronic gates to prevent vehicle access to the school grounds at the start and end of the school day and have requested that the Highways department extend the zig-zags right up to the school gates as well as on the highway. In the meantime we request that parents do not park within the school grounds or at the entrance to school so that pedestrians are able to enter the grounds safely. The police officers have suggested a one-way system which could be marshalled by volunteers to aid safety in the Aagrah car park. If you would be interested in volunteering to provide this service which would involve some training from the police, please contact school. Any other ideas would be gratefully received. Please complete the slip below with your suggestions. If we all work together to solve the problems with parking, I am sure we will be able to achieve a much safer environment for parents and children.

Are you raising children on your own?
Looking to get back into work but not sure where to start? If you want to know more about going back to work; child care; in work benefits; local courses to improve your existing skills; local employers; training schemes; advice; guidance and much, much more, you may be interested in a 3 day New Opportunity Experience. The events take place on Tues 8th Dec 9.30 - 2.30, Wed 9th Dec 9.30 - 2.30 and Thur 10th Dec 9.30 - 2.30 at Fusion Court, Aberford Road. Please call Learning Partnerships for more details or to book a place (0113 806662).

Year 3/4's Open Afternoon
Last Thursday Year 3/4 opened their doors at 3.00pm and welcomed lots of keen parents/grandparents into the classrooms. The children enjoyed guiding their parents around; showing off their work on display, taking them into the reading dens, looking at other children's learning logs as well as smiling at the photographs on the slide shows. Thank you to all those who were able to attend. We look forward to welcoming you all again next term.

Bulb bonanza
A group of children in Year 3/4 have been working hard over the last few weeks planting 1000 Spring flowering bulbs! The bulbs were kindly donated by Groundwork Trust in Leeds. Look out for a fantastic display around the school grounds in the Spring!

Attendance Champions!
Well done to Class 5/6N who had 100% attendance last week! Attendance for the whole school was 98.2% which is above our school target of 95.1%.

Christmas Fair
A huge thank you to everyone who attended the school fair on Thursday evening. The fair was a big success and was very well attended. Events like this take a great deal of planning and organisation and would not be possible without such a committed PTA, so thank you especially to those members who gave up their hard work and time. We hope you all enjoyed the fair and have been inspired to help out with future events.

Children in Need
Thank you to all those people who worked so hard to raise funds for Children in need. Everyone played their part in helping our school to raise £415.52 for this very worthy cause.

Christmas Dinner
Our special Christmas dinner takes place on Thursday 17th December (please see letter for further details). It would be wonderful to see as many children as possible having a school dinner on this day. All money for this special lunch needs to be sent to school by Wednesday 8th December.

Dear Parent / Carer,

Christmas Fair
Can you spare half an hour to help run your schools Christmas fair?
If you would like to volunteer to look after a stall either on your own or in a group of 2. Please contact Jane Hill either in the playground or leave a note in the PTA post box, which is located in the entrance area near the school office, please leave a contact number. Any help would be gratefully received.

Attendance Champions
Well done to Class 5/6N who had 100% attendance last week! Attendance for the whole school was 96.7% which is above our school target of 95.1%.

Children in Need
Today we have been supporting Children in Need. The school council have arranged lots of exciting fundraising events. There have been buns and quizzes on sale and Mrs Robinson has baked cakes for the staff all week. Never has there been such a good excuse to eat cake every day! It was great to see so many children had brought their teddy bear to school. Some of the teddies were so big they needed their own chair!

Staff Vacancies
We currently have two temporary vacancies for support staff. One is to cover Mrs Armitage in Y1/2 (who is going to be on maternity leave soon) and the other is in the Foundation Stage to provide additional support with flexible provision and Nursery lunches. If you are interested in either of the posts, please call at the office and collect a job application pack.

Leeds Rhinos Assembly
This week, the Leeds Rhinos coaches visited East Garforth to take an assembly about healthy lifestyles. Hopefully this will reinforce the healthy lifestyle messages we are sharing with children throughout their time at East Garforth.
Y6 height and weight checks
The children in Y6 have recently had a height and weight check with the school nursing service. After several complaints from parents about the content of the letters which were sent out after these checks, we have made a complaint as a school about our shared concern. As a result, the letters have been withdrawn and will no longer be used in their current form. If your child has been affected by the content of one of these letters, please inform myself or Mrs Thomas (learning mentor).

Calling all singers!
The Garforth primary schools are planning to start a combined choir, beginning after Christmas. The choir will rehearse weekly here on Tuesdays, from 4:30-5:30. It is expected children will be able to attend all rehearsals. Mrs Robinson would like anyone interested in Y3-6 to let her know ASAP, as she would like to hold auditions in the next few weeks.

Dear Parent / Carer,

Staff Training Day
Before the holidays, staff took part in a day of training about assessment for learning which is one of the priorities in our school improvement plan and will help children to make the best possible progress. Staff were engaged in dialogue about defining learning and the learning process. This helped them to reflect upon the way in which they teach and in particular how children learn, using the findings to inform and develop their practice. They also had opportunities to learn from the expertise of a range of staff in techniques used for questioning and talk for learning. The focus of our staff development this half term will be the use of success criteria to involve children in their learning by identifying success and making improvements, ensuring that children make good progress within every lesson. If you wish to see the school improvement plan in full, please contact one of the senior leadership team (Mrs Godfrey, Ms Morrisroe, Mr Waterhouse and Mrs Bell) who will provide you with a copy and provide any explanation necessary.

Who Dares Reads!
We have had the most fantastic week in school with a focus on reading. A huge thank you to Ms Morrisroe for organising such an exciting event which has inspired and challenged everyone! There has been a real 'buzz' around school and as the events have been so numerous, Ms Morrisroe is writing a separate newsletter to give you as much information as possible.

F2A Stay and play
Thank you to the parents who came to the recent 'stay and play' event in F2A. Here are some comments from the parents:
"It was lovely to see inside the classrooms, looking at all the different areas and my son loved showing me what he did. I felt it made him feel proud!"
"My child enjoyed having the opportunity to show off his classroom and his achievements on the walls."
"A valued opportunity to see where my child learns, what she learns and her achievements. I feel more in touch with what she is doing on a daily basis, being able to understand what she means when referring to something in her classroom."

Open afternoons
As a result of the successful 'stay and play' in F2A and due to parent feedback, we would like to hold regular 'open afternoon' events where parents can come and see their child in action. It will help to give parents a better understanding of what children are learning and the approaches used in the classroom. This half term each class will be inviting parents to come into school before the end of the school day. Look out for a letter from your child's class teacher. Next term, we plan to have open afternoons with a focus on maths and reading.

Staffing
Mrs O'Neill will be absent for the rest of the half term as she recovers from an operation. I am sure you will join with me in wishing her a speedy recovery. Mrs O'Neill's teaching duties will be carried out by Mrs Butler who we welcome back to East Garforth.

Dinner money
There has been a delay in setting up the on-line dinner money payment system. We will notify you when this is up and running.

'Taking pride in Garforth' Litter Picking Event
This event will take place on Sunday, 15th November 2009 at 10.00am starting from the Miners' Welfare Hall on Garforth Main Street. On arrival volunteers will be provided with litter pickers and bags. Ideally, volunteers would be able to give an hour or so of their time. All volunteers will be given refreshments (a delicious bacon butty!). Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Photographs
Please be advised that the photographer will be in school on Monday 16th November. There was a mistake on the recent letter which stated the wrong day.

Children in Need
Next Friday we are supporting Children in Need. The school council have arranged for children to bring 50p for the charity and in return, children can bring a teddy bear to school. Lots more exciting fundraising events are planned; details to follow.

Attendance Champions
Well done to Class 5/6C who had 99.4% attendance last week! Attendance for the whole school was 95.9% which is above our school target of 95.1%.

Sports News
Congratulations to the Athletics team for coming first in the second round of the cup competition. They are now through to the Sports Partnership Final. Thank you to all the parents who helped with transport and who supported the team. Boys' football will not be on tonight (13.11.09) or for the next two weeks. This is due to matches taking place. Netball club and Multi-Skills club will finish at 4pm as of next week. This is due to the dark nights.

Family of Schools Writers Groups.
Some of our Year 6 pupils have been attending St Benedict’s Primary School, which hosted a series of writers' workshops. The children completed their hard work on Thursday, by performing scenes from ‘The Lost Happy Endings’ by Carol Ann Duffy. Well done to Robbie, Charlotte, Neve and Josh for representing our school.

Dear Parent / Carer,

Swimming
Swimming sessions were suspended due to roof problems at Kippax Pool. Arrangements have now been made for swimming to take place at Wetherby Pool while Kippax is out of use. Children who go to swimming lessons should bring their kit on Monday as usual.

Who Dares Reads!
Our special book focus week takes place next week. The book fair will be in school all week and on Wednesday there will be a special book themed lunch. Please see Ms Morrisroe's letter for further details of book week. Friday is a dress down day (please see PTA letter for further details).

Attendance Champions
Well done to Class 3/4V who had 98.4% attendance last week! Attendance for the whole school was 94.3% which is below our school target of 95.1%.

Dinner Money
The cost of school dinners for this half term is £59.50.

Bags 2 School
Bags 2 School will be collected at the earlier time of 9.15am on Wednesday 18th November. Bags can be taken to the wet area next to the community room.

Parking
Unfortunately, there are still several parents who are parking at the school entrance or are using it to drop off children. In the interest of pedestrians' safety, please do not use this area at the beginning and end of the school day. Please could drivers of the following cars find an alternative place to drop-off and collect children: S650 AWU, K155 JEK, KP57 BVB, S648 SWF, M194 ROE, YE04 HGY. Your support in this matter is appreciated.

Freddy Fit
All the children in school from Nursery to Y6 took part in some fantastic physical activity this week with Freddy Fit! By popular demand, Freddy Fit was invited back to East Garforth for hours of fitness fun. All of the children who I have asked about the event said it was great and gave them some good ideas for how to keep fit and stay healthy. I have been told that the Freddy Fit website is worth a look (www.freddyfit.co.uk) along with the information booklets which were given to every child. I'm sure the website will soon have lots of photos from the event.

Views' of parents
Thank you to those people who have contributed to our questionnaires at the recent parents' information evening and parent / teacher consultations. Your views are important to us and help us to identify how we can improve. Letters will be sent to you regarding feedback from these.

Dear Parent / Carer,

Indoor Sports Hall Athletics
Congratulations to the Athletics team! On Thursday 15th October they competed in the first round of the competition and did amazingly well. They finished in a very close second place to Green Lane. East Garforth finished on 116 points and Green Lane finished on 117 points, so the competition was very high! They are now through to the second round of the cup competition, which will be held at John Smeaton after half term. Thank you to all the children who displayed an excellent attitude throughout and to all the parents who helped with transport and came to support.

Special Recognition Sports Award
East Garforth have been awarded a special sporting recognition for regular participation in School Competitions during 2008/2009 and for outstanding attitude towards sport. Well done to all those children who have been involved in school sport.

Attendance champions
Well done to Class 1/2R who had 98.9% attendance last week! Attendance for the whole school was 96% which is above our school target of 95.1%.

Family Matters
Family Matters is an opportunity to meet with a member of school staff and our Educational Psychologist to discuss issues such as behaviour or bed-wetting. The next Family Matters session is on Monday 2nd November from 1- 3pm in the community room. Parents need to phone school and book a place if they wish to attend.

KS2 Parent Volunteers
We are looking for any volunteers who have time to spare to come and help in Key Stage 2. The role of support staff is changing in school and teaching assistants will be spending most of their day working with intervention groups and supporting Maths and English teaching. Therefore, we have lots of jobs such as: mounting of work, photocopying, laminating etc. If you feel you could regularly spare an hour or two a week to help with this type of work, please contact myself. A CRB check would need to be completed before beginning working in school.

Dick Whittington
KS1 and KS2 watched a pantomine performance of Dick Whittington on Wednesday, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all the children.

Parent Governor Vacancies
We currently have two parent governor vacancies. If you are interested, please could you let the office know by Thursday 5th November.

Parking
There are still several parents who are using the entrance to school to either drop off children or to park and take children into school. This entrance is for pedestrian access only at the beginning and end of the school day in the interests of parent, pupil and staff safety. We are making a note of all registration plates who are parking in this area. Repeat offenders will have their registration plate published in forthcoming newsletters. Please use the Aagrah car park or park a little further away and walk the rest of the journey. Thank you in anticipation.

I hope everyone has a restful and enjoyable half-term holiday.

Ethos Statement: I know how to keep healthy

Dear Parent/Carer,

Who Dares Reads!
In preparation for our Book Week celebrations we are challenging children, parents and staff to have their photograph taken whilst they are reading a book in an unusual, exciting or strange situation out of the school environment. For example, someone reading the 'Jungle Book' whilst hanging upside down like a monkey. There will be prizes for the most creative ideas! Entries must be given or e-mailed to Ms Morrisroe by November 4th so that they can go on display for everyone to see during Book Week. Have fun but take care!!!!

Pedestrian Training
As part of a Road Safety project Years 3/4 have had a busy time taking part in pedestrian skills training. The children have been identifying safe places to cross and have been able to put their road crossing skills into practice, on roads in our local area. Francesca commented “ I really enjoyed the training and it has helped me to stay safe on the roads!”

Dirty Bertie Rendevous
On Tuesday Ms Morrisroe and a group of children went to the City Art Gallery in Leeds to meet the author and illustrator of the 'Dirty Bertie' series of books, David Roberts. He told them about how he gets his ideas for the stories and demonstrated how he creates the illustrations. He gave every child a signed postcard and Kelsey even got an autographed drawing! Ellie said, "I enjoyed joining in with him as we did the drawings," and Josh said, "It was exciting meeting an author and I liked it when we had to join in with the trump sounds in the story he read to us!"

Attendance Champions
Well done to Class 3/4V who had 100% attendance last week! Attendance for the whole school was 96.5% which is above our school target of 95.1%.

Training Day
Friday 23rd October will be a staff training day. School will be closed to children on this day.

India Day

Year 3/4 thoroughly enjoyed their 'India' Day on Thursday. Wonderful activities included professional drumming lessons (which were very noisy!), Bangra Dancing (Mrs Akbar showed a few cool moves!), pakora making and eating (thank you Leah's Grandma!) and the watching of a fabulous DVD of Sunil's relations getting married. A big thank you to Sunil's parents for all the resources and help they have given. Thank you to Mrs Long for making us all look beautiful in bindis and keeping us very sweet with Indian sweets.

Dear Parent / Carer,

Have you got the B Factor?
It is our annual Book Week during the week of November 8th. Mums, Dads, Grandads, Grandmas, big brothers..... - are you passionate about books? If so, we need you! If you are willing to come into school to read part of your favourite story or some of your favourite poems to the children during that week, please get in touch with Ms Morrisroe. We are hoping to arrange for you to come in at the start or end of the school day for no more than 10 minutes to share your love of books with groups of appreciative children.

Whitby Residential Meeting
There will be a meeting for Y6 parents on Tuesday 13th October at 7pm about the forthcoming residential to Whitby.

Y1/2 Educational Visit to the Thackray Medical Museum
Year 1/2 thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the Thackray Medical Museum. The children had the opportunity to explore their senses in a variety of different ways. The galleries took the children back in time, which gave them a sense of what Leeds was like in the 1840s. The children loved the experience, but not the foul smells! They also participated in a Florence Nightingale workshop in which they re-lived times in Scutarri and acted as porters and nurses. Key Stage 1 would like to say a big thank you to Mrs Rowley and Mr Williams for being our wounded soldiers and all our parent helpers. The children had a wonderful time and are already asking when their next school visit is.

School Preference forms - F1 and Y6
If your child is currently in F1 or Y6, don't forget to complete your school preference form for entry to F2 or Y7 in September 2010. The deadline is Friday 16th October. Attending East Garforth Nursery does not guarantee a place in Recption; you still need to fill in the form.

Dear Parent / Carer,

'The Big Wild Read'
During the summer holidays, the Library Service ran a reading challenge that was promoted in school. We are proud to inform you that Emily G in year 5 is a winner! She will be going to the 'Quest Seekers Winners Party' at the Central Library to receive her prize and meet the author, Livi Michaels. Congratulations, Emily!

East Garforth's Blog
We have recently set up a Blog to complement the website. This provides an opportunity for pupils and staff to tell the world (post) what they've been doing in school and share their thoughts about activities, visits, focus days etc., or simply to say "Hello" to friends and family. You can see the blog by going to http://eastgarforth.edublogs.org or simply by clicking the link on the school website's home page.

The blog has been set up in such a way as to ensure the online safety of all our pupils:
• all posts submitted by children have to be read and approved by a teacher prior to being published
• references to pupils' surnames are not allowed
• comments need to be approved by the blog administrator (Mr Waterhouse) prior to being published
• pupils are unable - intentionally or otherwise - to change their account settings (passwords, email)
• no direct contact with pupils is possible: pupil email accounts for the blog (necessary for membership) are all 'dummy' values - any emails sent go directly to the administrator, not to the pupil.

In addition to the above measures pupils are reminded that they should never give any personal information: full name, age, home address, phone numbers, email addresses, family details etc. when online. Posts for the Blog containing such information would not be approved, but similar care should always be taken when using the internet at home.

Y5/6 Educational Visit to the National Coal Mining Museum
Year 5/6 thoroughly enjoyed their visit to the NCM Museum yesterday and are already asking when are we going again! The children had the opportunity to go underground to see what life was like for a miner and were able to experience crawling through small spaces and in some cases getting very dirty-which was the highlight for some children. They also participated in a 'Dig Deeper' workshop, which was delivered by a 'real-life' miner!

Attendance champions
Well done to Class 1/2R and 1/2A who had 99.3% attendance last week! Attendance for the whole school was 96.6% which is above our school target of 95.1%.

Open Days
We will be holding an open afternoon on Wednesday 14th October 1.30-3pm and an open evening on Tuesday 13th October 6-7pm for parents who are looking for a Nursery or Reception place for their child next year. The events will begin with a short presentation from myself and be followed by a tour of the school by children in Y6. Please pass this information to anyone who is looking for a school place for next year.

Visit consent forms
Please return visit consent forms as soon as possible.

Kingswood Y5 Residential
Final payments for the Year 5 residential are due by Friday 9th October.

Swimming
As Kippax pool is currently closed due to problems with the roof, swimming lessons are cancelled until further notice.

Lunchtime vacancies
We currently have vacancies from 12-1 at lunchtimes to supervise the pupils. If you are interested, please contact the office.

Ethos Statement: I know that a good education will help me to make choices in the future.

Dear Parent / Carer,

'Reach for the sky and one day we'll be flying'
We have taken a line from our East Garforth school song as our school motto. This now appears on our school letter head, website and all materials published by the school. This week in assembly we discussed our school motto 'Reach for the sky and one day we'll be flying.' Staff and children shared their aspirations for the future. We are really keen to raise children's aspirations and to help them see the link between what they learn in Primary school and how it will help them to make choices in the future and hopefully realise their dreams. We are really keen to hear from any parents who have achieved something they are proud of to share their stories with us (send an e-mail, phone school or see me in the playground). We would like to put photographs of parents' or past pupils' achievements on display in school. It would be a real inspiration for the children of East Garforth to see what is possible and what other people have done. Don't be shy! You may have climbed a mountain, run the London marathon, swum the channel, learned a new language, gone to university or have the job of your dreams. Whatever it may be, I am sure it could provide inspiration to others.

Focus Days
Our first focus day of the year takes place today and is based on the children's choice of what they want to learn about. Rather than a whole school theme, each class has voted for their choice of theme for the day. As always, we are keen to hear your comments on the day as it will help us to plan future events. Please complete and return the reply slip below. Hopefully, it will be an exciting day and I look forward to seeing photographs of the day on the website next week.

Attendance champions
Well done to Class 3/4V who had 100% attendance last week! Attendance for the whole school was 97.2% which is above our school target of 95.1%.

Open Days
We will be holding an open afternoon on Wednesday 14th October 1.30-3pm and an open evening on Tuesday 13th October 6-7pm for parents who are looking for a Nursery or Reception place for their child next year. Dear Parent / Carer,

Holidays in term time
If you are looking to book a holiday, please try to make your booking during school holidays wherever possible. Holidays during school time will only be authorised in exceptional circumstances and will not be authorised during September (from next year) or during SATs. In 2010 SATs for Y2 will take place during the month of May and for Y6 during the week beginning 10th May. From 2011, Y6 SATs will take place in June.

Parents' Information Evening
Last night the information evenings were held for each phase group. It was fantastic to see so many parents keen to find out what children will be learning, how learning is organised and how to help at home. We do value your support. It is widely recognised that a strong home/school partnership is vital in helping your child reach his/her potential. Initial feedback suggests that parents found these meetings very informative. We are interested in everyone's views so please complete and return the reply slip below to give your feedback. Your comments are very important to us and will help shape the support which is provided to parents throughout the year. If you were unable to attend, you will be receiving some information which explains the items discussed.

Focus Days
Last year we introduced a number of focus days and focus weeks to our curriculum. These have been very popular with children, parents and staff and will therefore will continue this year. Our first focus day takes place next Friday and is based on the children's choice of what they want to learn about. Rather than a whole school theme, each class has voted for their choice of theme for the day. If you are able to help in any way or have an interest in any of the following themes, please see your child's class teacher.
KS1 - Animals
Y3/4B - Animals
Y3/4R - Art
Y3/4V - Drama
Y5/6E - Art
Y5/6N - Food
Y5/6C - Art
Hopefully, it will be an exciting day and I look forward to sharing the highlights with you next week.

Attendance champions
Well done to Class 5/6N who had 100% attendance last week! Attendance for the whole school was 99% which is above our school target of 95.1%.

Dear Parent / Carer,

Parents' information evening
Please complete and return your reply slip if you have not already done so. It is very important that as many parents as possible attend. As we have made lots of changes this year, this will allow staff to share information which is the same for all pupils so that at the forthcoming parent/ teacher consultation, the time can be spent discussing your child. The meetings will take place in your child's classroom with the class teacher. The school hall will be available for parents to sit and wait if they have a gap between meetings.

Training Days
The school will be closed to pupils on Monday 14th September. Staff will be developing a new curriculum. The new curriculum overview will be shared with you at the parents' information meetings on Thursday 17th.

French lessons
La Jolie Ronde French classes for children are now being held at St.Mary's Church Hall Garforth on Saturday mornings for 3-11 year olds. These are small classes which follow a structured and progressive programme that has been developed by La Jolie Ronde since they formed in 1983. It improves confidence and teaches a language whilst having fun and complements and enhances languages taught in the curriculum. Your child is invited to a Free Taster session on the 12th of September at St.Mary’s Church Hall in Garforth. For ages 3+ please call by 9 pm Friday night so they know to expect you. If you cannot make the 12th please get in touch quoting East Garforth Primary and your child can come along for a free first session to try it out. Please contact Liz Nicholas, La Jolie Ronde Licensee if you would like to take advantage of these opportunities or to find out some more information. Liznicholas@gmail.com 07738084719 www.lajolieronde.co.uk

Dinner Money
Please note that the cost for dinner money this year is £1.70 a day / £8.50 per week.

Parking
Please can I remind parents that you must not drop off children by car using the front entrance of school. As there are no pedestrian footpaths at this entrance, we do not allow vehicles in this area at drop-off and pick-up times. This is in the interests of everyone's safety. I have also had complaints about inconsiderate parking (across drives) at Carisbrooke Lane. Please ensure that you park safely. This may mean parking further away and walking the rest of the journey. A short walk would help children and adults be more healthy.

Gardening at East Garforth
We have had a successful harvest at East Garforth. I have seen some classes digging up onions and the gardening club have picked their peas and courgettes. Mrs Kirkham is using our vegetables in our tasty school dinners. Well done to all our budding gardeners!

Junior Masterchef
If your child loves cooking, and is aged between 9 and 12 and would like to take part in a new CBBC series of Junior Masterchef, please see the following website for details. www.masterchef.tv

Forms from the office
You should be receiving a visit consent form which has all the necessary contact and medical information for when children are being educated off-site. Please ensure you send this form to the office, as children will not be able to go on school trips until it has been received. Pupils in Y3 and Y6 should also be receiving a contact form which needs checking, amending as necessary and then returning to school. It is important that we have accurate contact information for all pupils. If you have changed address, job or have a new mobile phone, please let us know your new details.

Attendance champions
Well done to Class 1/2 R and 3/4V who had 100% attendance last week! Attendance for the whole school was 97.4% which is above our school target of 95.1%.

Dear Parent / Carer,

Welcome Back!
This week we welcome back all pupils and staff and a number of pupils and staff who are new to the school. I hope it will be an exciting and very productive year for East Garforth. Our focus this year for school improvement will have three main themes: assessment for learning; curriculum innovation and developing leadership. Our ultimate goal is to improve learning progress for every child and the themes we are concentrating on will help us to meet that aim. I will be sharing a summary of our school improvement plan with you once it has been agreed by all staff and governors.

Parents' information evening
We will be holding an evening meeting for parents where you will be able to find out about your child in their new year group. The information meeting will explain procedures such as homework, expectations, trips, the curriculum for the year, which calculation strategies will be taught etc. The meetings will take place on Thursday September 17th and there will be a meeting for each phase group (R, Y1/2, Y3/4 and Y5/6). Please complete and return the reply slip below if you are able to attend. Once we have an idea of numbers we can let you know the venue for each meeting.

Training Days
The training days for this year will be as follows:
Monday 14th September, Friday 23rd October, Friday 12th February, Monday 15th March and Friday 28th May.

Trust Matters
You should receive your copy of the termly Trust Matters publication today. I hope you enjoy reading about a sample of the exciting things happening at East Garforth and throughout the School Partnership Trust.

Uniform
It is fantastic to see everyone looking so smart in their uniform. Please remind your child that no jewellery should be worn to school for health and safety reasons. Stud earrings or small sleepers for pupils having had their ears recently pierced are allowed but must be covered by a plaster (provided from home) during PE lessons. PE kits should be brought to school each Monday and returned home every Friday as PE may take place on different days each week depending on the weather. This will also allow the cloakrooms to be emptied weekly for thorough cleaning and should help to reduce the amount of lost property.

Fruit Tuck Shop
We have decided to stop the fruit tuck shop in its present form for the time being. Although in principle it is a fantastic idea, it has become unmanageable in terms of staff time and running costs to supply fruit for a small number of pupils. We are investigating alternative ways of organising the system and hope to have a new approach by the end of the term. In the meantime please can I encourage all parents to send their children to school with a portion of fruit or vegetables to eat at morning break.

Nut Allergies
Please can I remind parents not to send food containing nuts in children's packed lunches. This is to protect those who have a nut allergy. Thank you for your consideration with this matter.
